The Writing on the Wall

Posted by Shrigley Photography (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States) on 15 August 2007 in Miscellaneous.

The walls of Penn Station in NYC have some interesting quotes on them, this was one I took a photo of while waiting for the train home.

I'll be finishing up the week with photos from New York City and then starting a new series from Cape May, New Jersey.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and for all your comments :) I'll be stopping by to check everyone out throughout the week.

Until Tomorrow...

Please feel free to leave constructive comments (positive, negative, indifferent). I think feedback is one of the most important tools anyone can use when engaged in the learning process.

very interesting quote indeed...
can we ever be truly satisfied and contented?

@kairospix: unfortunately, no. I must admit, I was rather disappointed with this quote at the end---I was hoping he would say that the slient moment to himself was worth $10M and that he was just content to let it be. Then again, I can't help but wonder if its sarcasim as well.
Thanks for stopping by ! :)

I find myself in complete agreement with Mr. Burke --though I don't care about the fame. I read it as mixed ironic. The first part is a comment about "the news" --that it is a distortion and an intrusion, and that turning it off is a means of gaining some temporary peace. The book and the drink represent the opposite of television, most especially the "news" that he has turned off in search of tranquility. A "book" and a "drink" suggest considered thought, contemplation, perspective, and reflection --all qualities deliberately missing from TV and TV "news." I think the closing is partially ironic in that it refers to the superficial things that TV and TV news promote: money, looks, and fame; but at the same time, he used "better health" instead of "looks," and this suggests to me a puncturing of superficiality --something actually longed for in distinction to values of television. The closing lines therefore are partially ironic and represent personal conflict: the fame and the money are what the TV tells us we supposed to want instead of what is represented by the book and drink, but at the same time, which of us couldn't use a little more money, and with the exception perhaps of the very young, better health?
